Chímaira
I: Liontári (Lion)
II: Fídi (Serpent)
III: Katsíka (Goat)
The Chímaira (Chimera) is a monstrous, fire-breathing hybrid creature from Greek Mythology. The creature is usually depicted as a lion with a snake-head tail, with a goat's head on its back, with some versions depicting it with dragon wings. In this piece, each movement focuses on one of the heads of the Chimera, with motives and themes stretching between movements.
In a way, the Wind Quintet is similar to a Chimera, being an amalgamation of a variety of types of instruments, ranges, and timbres, each having its own characteristic sound; but when put together, they form a composite creation, one group, one beast.
This piece uses the following instrumentation:
- Flute and Piccolo
- Oboe
- Bb Clarinet
- F Horn
- Bassoon
